Adnan Januzaj believes he would have got more opportunity at Manchester United had he arrived for a major transfer fee and not been a product of the club’s youth system.

The Belgian international burst onto the scene for United under the guidance of David Moyes and netted an iconic brace against Sunderland on his debut for the club.

Januzaj soon earned a permanent promotion to the first-team and after some impressive performances was rewarded with a new long-term contract at the club.

However, following the dismissal of Moyes at the end of the 2013/14 season Januzaj struggled to ever make an impression under Louis van Gaal or Jose Mourinho.

After a series of mixed loan-spells Januzaj finally left Old Trafford for good in the summer of 2017, but he still believes he might have been able to change his fortunes at United had he arrived for a transfer fee.

“It could be,” Januzaj told The Telegraph when asked if he played for United at the wrong time.

“Imagine, for example, if I had started here at Real Sociedad and I could have been bought for, I don’t know, a lot of money [by United]. It would have been different.

“There, I was an academy player, came through the youth and it felt different. Now, if you pay £60-70 million for a player he has more chance to play than you. That’s how football is….

“I was really young.

“I started in the first team and it’s even harder to take criticism when you are such a young player, but, obviously, people were expecting a lot from me. I wanted to show those people but I didn’t have that small chance to do it.”
