Former Manchester City manager Stuart Pearce has predicted the outcome of the upcoming Premier League season, where he backs Liverpool to win the league.
City edged the Reds in a tremendous title race last season, finishing with a tally of 98 points to finish just a single point ahead of Jurgen Klopp’s side.
Klopp went on to lead Liverpool to a sixth Champions League though and Pearce believes the squad are in a strong position to snatch the league crown from Pep Guardiola next year, preventing City from a third consecutive Premier League title.
“I predicted Liverpool would win the league last summer. To get 90 odd points like they did and not win it, you’ve got to give credit to Manchester City,” he told TalkSport.
“I’m tipping Liverpool this year. It’s the holy grail they’re chasing and I think it will show in their focus even more now.
“It was a sensational season. They were near enough exemplary in the Premier League, barring one defeat to Manchester City, and they rested players in the FA Cup to take it very lightly.
“They’ve got [Joe] Gomez to come back, there is such high expectations for him, and Oxlade-Chamberlain as well to come back and join what they’ve got.
“They have lost a couple of players like [Alberto] Moreno and [Daniel] Sturridge but that won’t hurt them at all.”
Man City meet Liverpool at Wembley in the Community Shield at the start of August in the annual curtain raiser for the new season, before travelling to Anfield on September 11th in the Premier League.
Guardiola will then welcome the Reds to the Etihad Stadium for the reverse clash on April 4th, which could be a title decider as there will be just six matches remaining after that meeting.
