Former Manchester United striker Robin van Persie is set to be a feature on Premier League and Champions League TV coverage in the 2019/20 season.

Van Persie retired from football last month as he called time on a glittering career that spanned over 20 years and saw him represent Feyenoord, Arsenal, United and Fenerbahce before finally returning to his boyhood club for a second stint.

The Mirror reports that the 35-year-old will now become the big-name signing for BT Sport ahead of the new campaign.

The Dutchman will be remembered fondly at Old Trafford and throughout the whole of England as a player of incredible skill and a scorer of remarkable goals.

He netted 58 times in 105 games for United and played a crucial part in securing the Premier League title as he won the Golden Boot in Sir Alex Ferguson’s final season in charge.

Van Persie will join fellow former United players Rio Ferdinand and Owen Hargreaves in working on BT Sport.

The broadcaster will show 52 Premier League matches during the new season, an increase of 20 on last term.

Speaking after his retirement, he explained his future plans: “I won’t take on big commitments in the next year,”

“Although I’m very thankful for the life I have now, and that I had, if you’re on that football train it’s like you have to report at nine o’clock, you have to go on pre-season, you have to be there, you have to perform.

“Now I don’t have to do anything, for the moment. I can be the coach of my own life, fill it how I want to. But I want to bring some structure and still be busy with sports – tennis, swimming, be active. But mainly just enjoy that little bit of freedom I have now, which I never had.”
