Pep Guardiola’s assertion that Rodri will be the most important Manchester City signing of recent years raised some eyebrows last week.

Not because Rodri is not a fine player, but the club record signing had only made one competitive appearance in the Community Shield, and City’s pre-season opponents were hardly the standard of team that will push them for trophies at the end of the season.

Making his Premier League debut against West Ham, Rodri showed exactly why Guardiola waited a season to find a long-term replacement for Fernandinho with some lovely passing against a difficult opposition. But at the same time, there were occasions where he was caught in possession, and the Spaniard will have to adapt to English football quickly.

So with Fernandinho getting another week of training under his belt, Guardiola could be tempted to take Rodri out of the firing line and go for the trusted Brazilian when Tottenham visit the Etihad. It would be a risk, with Fernandinho not playing a game since the Copa America, but there are arguments for and against playing both him and Rodri.

It seems fans are equally split regarding the dilemma facing Guardiola, with nothing to separate fans when MEN Sport asked followers who should start against Spurs – a fully fit Fernandinho or record signing Rodri.

Out 2,000 responses, Rodri just edged his teammate with 50% of the vote.

49% backed Fernandinho, with 1% preferring another option. Fans suggested playing Ilkay Gundogan in the defensive midfield role, or using both Fernandinho and Rodri with Kevin de Bruyne in a central position in front of the pair.

Whoever Guardiola chooses, he is likely to face the same dilemma all season.

Fernandinho’s age means he is less likely to play every game, but that would indicate he could be saved for the bigger occasions such as Tottenham.

But Guardiola is in a comfortable position that he has two quality players at his disposal, and both can be trusted to play the most important role in his complex game plan.
