What must Phil Foden do to earn a start at Manchester City?
One of the most talented teenagers in world football, Foden showed his quality for England U21s twice this week when he dictated the Young Lions’ forward play in their 3-2 win in Turkey, before scoring twice in the 2-0 win over Kosovo on Monday night.
After his brace for England, Foden was again asked about his playing time at City. Once again, he insisted he will wait for his opportunities at City.
“I enjoy playing and just keep a smile on my face when I play,” he said. “That’s the main thing tonight – to get minutes. I enjoyed every minute. It’s very early into the year, and I’m just waiting for my chance.”
But Foden’s performances this week won’t have gone unnoticed by Guardiola, and a start against newly-promoted Norwich can’t be out of the question on Saturday.
And when MEN Sport asked fans whether Foden should play at Carrow Road, they overwhelmingly backed him to play some part in the fixture.
But fans were more split over whether Foden should feature from the start, with 59 per cent wanting to see his name on the starting line up, and 39 per cent backing him to come off the bench.
Among the replies on Twitter were fans acknowledging the riches of midfield talent at Guardiola’s disposal that mean starting Foden is not a simple decision. Others were willing to trust Guardiola with choosing the right time for Foden to play, with plenty of fixtures across three competitions coming up in the coming weeks.
What fans were agreed on, though, is that they want to see more of Foden in a City shirt – whether he starts on the bench or not.
